Sample credit for the original invoice
What this template includes
- The original invoice number
- Credit note number and date
- Credited lines shown as negative amounts
- The reason for the credit
- Seller and customer details
Sample names and amounts are placeholders. Change everything in the editor.
When to issue a credit note
Issue one when you billed too much, the goods came back or the work was not delivered. Do not edit a sent invoice. A credit note keeps both documents intact and the books correct.
Credit note and credit memo
They are the same document. Credit memo is the common US term and credit note is used in the UK and EU.
Reference the original
Always name the invoice being credited. In the EU and UK a credit note for VAT purposes must link to the original invoice.

1. Open the template
Click the button above. The editor opens with the lines, notes and payment terms already filled in, so you start from a working invoice instead of a blank page.
2. Replace the sample data
Swap in your own business details, your client, the real quantities and prices. Tax and totals recalculate as you type, so there is no manual arithmetic to get wrong.
3. Download or send it
Export a PDF, or create an e-invoice (XRechnung or ZUGFeRD) when your client needs one. Save the invoice to your account to track it until it is paid.
